
Piano Sizes
We have all heard pianos referred to as a “Spinet”, “Upright”, “Studio”, “Concert Grand”, or “Baby Grand” – but most folks outside of the music or piano world truly understand what those designations mean.
While there may be a number of variables, at its most basic level, those titles refer to the size of that particular piano.
Upright Piano Sizes
Sizes and Types – The standard width of an upright piano is about 5′ and the depth is between 2 – 2½’. The height of a vertical piano is measured from the floor to the top of the piano. There are four types of vertical pianos, based on piano height: Spinet, Console, Studio, and Upright. The size is measured from the floor to the top of the lid.

Grand Sizes
The standard width of a grand piano is about 5’. The length, however, varies from 4 ½ to 91/2
feet.
Grand pianos are measured by the length from the very front of the keyboard to
the farthest end of the piano along the spine with the lid closed.

Small Grand under 4½’ to 5’
Baby Grand 5’ to 5’5”
Medium Grand 5’6” to 5’9”
Living Room Grand – 5’10”
Professional Grand – 6′
Drawing Room Grand – 6’4″
Parlour Grand 6’8″
Semi Concert Grand 7’4″
Concert Grand – 8′ 11′ and larger
