Being in the store at the Eugene Piano Company these last few weeks has been an amazing experience! We have piano inventory coming and going every week. 2019 was a fun year with record sales, and it looks like 2020 may be even better! We have already had the opportunity to make friends with more folks and help them find their next Musical Family member!
Buying a new (or new to you) piano is an exciting experience! When we bring that piano into someone’s home, we always strive to make it the most positive experience possible. Now it is up to the piano owners to keep their piano in excellent musical health. Most folks believe that this entails keeping the instrument dusted and cleaned and tuned when notes start to sound a little sour. That is a good start – but allow us to give you a few more suggestions:
Pay attention to changes in the seasons! Pianos are made of fine woods, wound metal strings and felt. All of these materials are subject to shifts and changes when temperature and humidity change, Sound boards and strings will expand and contract. Pins that hold springs in place will become tighter or loosen. All of these affect the sound you hear.
Another important issue for pianos is disuse! A piano that sits unused for long periods of time often lose pitch. Sometimes the fluctuation of pitch will be even across the board making it seem as if all is well, when actually, the pitch has slid and strings become stiff and dirty with disuse. If you are not going to be using your piano for awhile, give us a call! We may be able to give you some ideas on keeping it in good shape.
